Alfredo Tortellini with Turkey Sausage and Fire Roasted Tomatoes

Doesn’t the title just make your mouth water?!  It sure does mine…  In fact, just thinking about anything that involves alfredo makes me drool.  I love the stuff.  Paired with some stuffed pasta such as tortellini makes it even better.  What is a downside to alfredo sauce?  The fact that it is often times one of the heaviest and unhealthiest pasta sauces you can get, hence the reason I love it so much

Needless to say, when Foodbuzz sent me Classico’s Light Creamy Alfredo Sauce to try, I was thrilled!!  It has 50% less fat and 45% fewer calories compared to your average alfredo sauce.  At first, I was a little skeptical that it would taste as good as the normal, full fat version, but I was completely wrong.  It still has that rich and creamy taste that I know and love in a delicious alfredo sauce.  Not only that, but it is made with real, high-quality ingredients such as cream, Parmesan cheese, and butter but is still only 60 calories per serving!  Um, talk about heaven in a jar!

I could easily whip up some fettuccini alfredo with chicken to make things super simple, but I wanted to turn this heavenly jar into more of a creative dish.  I immediately thought of tortellini since it is one of my favorite types of pasta.  Then some turkey sausage came to mind.  Then I eyed the fire roasted tomatoes we had sitting in our refrigerator which I immediately knew were going to be a great addition.  What did this combo create my friends?!  Well here it is…

Alfredo Tortellini with Turkey Sausage and Fire Roasted Tomatoes

Servings: About 6

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 10-15 minutes

  • 1 package turkey sausage
  • 1 “family size” (about 6 servings) package cheese tortellini
  • 1 jar Classico Light Creamy Alfredo Pasta Sauce
  • 1/4 cup fire roasted tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon basil
  • 1 teaspoon oregano

1.  Cut turkey sausages in about 1 inch pieces and brown in skillet on medium heat for about 5 minutes.

2.  Take turkey sausage off of heat and set aside.

3.  Boil water in a large saucepan.  Pour tortellini in boiling water and turn down heat to a light boil.  Let boil for about 5 minutes.

4.  Strain the tortellini and dump it back into the sauce pan.

5.  Add the turkey sausage, jar of alfredo sauce, fire roasted tomatoes, oregano, and basil to the tortellini in the sauce pan.  Mix all ingredients together.

6.  Heat on medium-low while stirring consistently for about 5 minutes.

7.  Dish it up and dig in!

I paired the pasta with a side of steamed broccoli and it was delicious!  The pasta filled me up a lot quicker than I thought, most likely because of the stuffed pasta and turkey sausage added to it.

  • What is your favorite kind of pasta sauce?  (i.e. alfredo, marinara, pesto, meat sauce, etc.)
  • What is your pasta of choice?
  • Do you usually use jarred pasta sauce or make your own?

This is where we have to agree to disagree. I actually hate Alfredo sauce (and most cream based sauces actually…). I mean, I’d eat it if I had to, but I just feel like my arteries are clogging… even if it’s a healthy version! Although I LOVE tortellini!!! Haha so other than the sauce, that looks delicious!

Wow that looks delish! I love love alfredo sauce but never have it for all the calories and fat in it – but this I’ll have to try! And with only 60 calories a cup and still tastes awesome? Sweet! Other than that I’ll always love my mom’s homemade meat sauce, no one else makes it like hers and that’s the only time I’ll have it!

I tried this sauce a few months ago and was blown away by how rich it tasted. I normally go for tomato based sauces, but this was perfect for an alfredo lover. I can’t remember the last time I had tortellini! It was a go to food for me growing up and now I definitely want some.

This is awesome – I’m so glad I came across this post while I was looking through your site. I love alfredo sauce but I thought it was out of the picture FOREVER for me since I have such a hard time controlling my weight. Hopefully I’ll be able to try it soon :)

I made this for my family and our guest tonight! They loved it! I was very pleased with it as well. The only thing I would do differently is add more tomatoes :) There’s always next time! Thank you so much for this recipe.
