The Breakfast Smoothie

by Ashley on July 24, 2012

Good morning!

I loved all of your thoughts and comments on yesterday’s post.  Thank you again for being so awesome.  I really do have the best readers!

I don’t know about you, but I need breakfast.  Not only do I need it, but it’s not a meal I like to skimp on.  (You shouldn’t either! Winking smile)  Breakfast is the meal that helps me get my energy going for the day.  I like most of my meals to be healthy, but breakfast is especially important for me to fit in a good amount of complex carbohydrates, protein, healthy fats, and produce all in one.  The carbs give me energy, the protein and healthy fats help me feel satiated, and the produce gives me extra nutrients.

Some of you may be wondering how in the world it’s possible to fit ALL of those things into one breakfast.  It’s actually not as difficult as you’d think!  Some of my favorites are oatmeal with fruit topped with nut butter, pancakes with fruit topped with nut butter, toast topped with peanut butter and sliced banana, and lastly, smoothies!

Smoothies are one of my favorite breakfasts during the summer time since it’s so warm outside.  I make my breakfast smoothies a little different than other smoothies.  I add oatmeal for my complex carbohydrate, protein powder and milk for my protein, nut butter for my healthy fats, and fruit and/or spinach for my produce.  Below is my favorite breakfast smoothie combo.

The Breakfast Smoothie

Makes 1 large serving

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup oats
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1/2 ripe banana
  • 4-5 large strawberries
  • Handful of blueberries
  • Handful of spinach
  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • Ice

Directions:

Add everything to a blender and blend until smooth.  Pour into your favorite glass and enjoy!

  • What are some of your favorite healthy breakfasts?
  • Do you make smoothies a lot during the summer?

I make smoothies way more in the summer! In the winter its the last thing I want on a cold day so I take full advantage of having them all summer.
I love smoothies in a bowl with Multi-grain Cheerios, protein pancakes, overnight oats, Greek yogurt with fruit and nut butter.

That smoothie looks refreshing. I don’t make smoothies but I do make Shakeology shakes which are yummy. My go-to breakfast is Kashi GoLean but sometimes I switch it up and have a greek yogurt parfait. I love cereal though. :)

Smoothies are my favorite breakfast option all year long. You can fit so many healthy ingredients into a smoothie, and the addition of fruit helps to mask the taste of the greens and other super-foods. My favorite way to eat a smoothie is to make it nice and thick and pour it into a bowl, topped with some cereal, shredded coconut, and chia seeds. YUM!

Totally agree – I need breakfast as well. I can’t understand how some people can go on without it! I wake up ravaging (which probably isn’t normal either..). Anyway, yes I love smoothies and make them a ton all year round. In addition to smoothies, some of my favourite breakfast items are oatmeal + berries, toast with PB + bananas, waffles with almond butter + chia, and yogurt/berry/granola parfaits!

Mmm…your smoothie looks like such a great way to start a summer day! I’ve heard that adding oats makes them extra thick and delicious, but haven’t tried it yet. I almost always have eggs in some form for breakfast. I’m still loving egg white puffs, but I often make coconut flour crepes/pancakes or pumpkin protein cakes (all egg based!). And I always have a side of sauteed spinach with garlic. :) My meal isn’t complete if I don’t have both savory and sweet!

I see smoothies all over blogs and they always look so good and seem to be such a healthy choice! I have a hard time with them though because I never feel satisfied after drinking one, I think mainly because I feel like I am drinking not eating? Maybe I need to try making one and having it in a bowel with a spoon!

11 Ashley July 25, 2012 at 1:41 pm

i think that’s a great idea! make it extra thick, add some cereal and/or granola as toppings, and dig in with a spoon. ;)

Not a breakfast fan… shame on me! I did have some cucumbers with sea salt this morning.

JP got me a nice blender for my birthday, thinking I might use it for smoothies so I would eat SOMETHING for breakfast. I may have to bust it out soon, because this smoothie looks so refreshing!

I don’t make nearly as many smoothies as I should & would like to, but they’re just never what I’m in the mood for on the weekends. (can’t easily make one post-workout at the gym before work M-F)

I’ve never had oats or pb in a smoothie before, but it sounds good!

I have a smoothie pretty much EVERY day! LOVE ‘em.

I do spinach, choc protein powder, almond milk, berries, greek yog, ice, and stevia. SO good.

Lately I have been eating eggs for breakfast. During the school year, I workout most mornings and don’t have time to make them. This morning I had an omelet with two eggs, spinach, mushroom, and a little morel and leek brick cheese. On the side I had strawberries. It has kept me going for five hours now!

Breakfast is by far my favorite meal of the day, and it’s so important! I’ve never tried oats in a smoothie before, do you grind them in a food processor first or just throw them right in?

Reply

36 Ashley July 25, 2012 at 1:47 pm

i just throw them right in! they grind up in the blender!

My favourite breakfast is probably protein pancakes. I love pancakes, so having a healthified version is awesome – they tend to come out at least 3-4 days a week.

I love smoothies in the summer! I like to make a green smoothie with almond milk, spinach, protein powder and a frozen banana with cereal and fruit toppings. I work out in the mornings, so I tend to be overheated from the weather and from exercising, so a smoothie is a perfect solution. :-)

I’ve never really had a smoothie for breakfast before because whenever I have smoothies for snacks, they only keep me full for like 1.5 hours max! :P Love your idea to add oats to it though – that would definitely give it some staying power!

40 Ashley July 25, 2012 at 1:48 pm

i notice that the oats + nut butter helps give it some major staying power!

I make a TON of smoothies in the summer! For breakfast and for post-workout eats. I love to add cottage cheese and protein powder for my protein (and to make it creamy). This one looks delicious!

47 Ashley July 25, 2012 at 1:52 pm

hi caitlyn! i’m not partial to a specific brand, but currently i’m using 1st step pro wellness whey protein powder. i like to switch it up depending on what i’ve heard and what’s on sale. i try to find ones that are low in sugar and carbs, and high in protein. i don’t track my protein intake but i’m guessing i get around 70-80 grams per day, maybe sometimes more.

48 Lisa July 24, 2012 at 10:07 pm

Yum, I love how the smoothie is overflowing. Mine always make huge amounts.
For some reason, smoothies never ever fill me up, no matter what I add in them. I guess its just because its liquid.
I still make them though, especially throughout the summer.
I love them with oats for the texture. Avocado is super good too, gets so creamy! And of course an insane amount of fruits.

49 Ashley July 25, 2012 at 1:52 pm

i would suggest making your smoothies extra thick, adding some toppings, and eating it with a spoon out of a bowl! it might seem more satisfying to you that way. :)
