Good morning!
I loved all of your thoughts and comments on yesterday’s post. Thank you again for being so awesome. I really do have the best readers!
I don’t know about you, but I need breakfast. Not only do I need it, but it’s not a meal I like to skimp on. (You shouldn’t either!
) Breakfast is the meal that helps me get my energy going for the day. I like most of my meals to be healthy, but breakfast is especially important for me to fit in a good amount of complex carbohydrates, protein, healthy fats, and produce all in one. The carbs give me energy, the protein and healthy fats help me feel satiated, and the produce gives me extra nutrients.
Some of you may be wondering how in the world it’s possible to fit ALL of those things into one breakfast. It’s actually not as difficult as you’d think! Some of my favorites are oatmeal with fruit topped with nut butter, pancakes with fruit topped with nut butter, toast topped with peanut butter and sliced banana, and lastly, smoothies!
Smoothies are one of my favorite breakfasts during the summer time since it’s so warm outside. I make my breakfast smoothies a little different than other smoothies. I add oatmeal for my complex carbohydrate, protein powder and milk for my protein, nut butter for my healthy fats, and fruit and/or spinach for my produce. Below is my favorite breakfast smoothie combo.
The Breakfast Smoothie
Makes 1 large serving
Ingredients:
- 1/3 cup oats
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
- 1/2 ripe banana
- 4-5 large strawberries
- Handful of blueberries
- Handful of spinach
- 1 tablespoon peanut butter
- 3/4 cup milk
- Ice
Directions:
Add everything to a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into your favorite glass and enjoy!
Questions:
- What are some of your favorite healthy breakfasts?
- Do you make smoothies a lot during the summer?

I make smoothies way more in the summer! In the winter its the last thing I want on a cold day so I take full advantage of having them all summer.
I love smoothies in a bowl with Multi-grain Cheerios, protein pancakes, overnight oats, Greek yogurt with fruit and nut butter.
That smoothie looks refreshing. I don’t make smoothies but I do make Shakeology shakes which are yummy. My go-to breakfast is Kashi GoLean but sometimes I switch it up and have a greek yogurt parfait. I love cereal though.
i LOVE the shakeology shakes! i just wish they weren’t so pricey.
I LOVE adding oatmeal to smoothies! It gives so much staying power…keeps me full! I think this smoothie incorporates all of my favorite ingredients ever into one glass. Yummm
i think you’d love it!
Smoothies are my favorite breakfast option all year long. You can fit so many healthy ingredients into a smoothie, and the addition of fruit helps to mask the taste of the greens and other super-foods. My favorite way to eat a smoothie is to make it nice and thick and pour it into a bowl, topped with some cereal, shredded coconut, and chia seeds. YUM!
Totally agree – I need breakfast as well. I can’t understand how some people can go on without it! I wake up ravaging (which probably isn’t normal either..). Anyway, yes I love smoothies and make them a ton all year round. In addition to smoothies, some of my favourite breakfast items are oatmeal + berries, toast with PB + bananas, waffles with almond butter + chia, and yogurt/berry/granola parfaits!
your breakfasts are some of my favorites too.
Mmm…your smoothie looks like such a great way to start a summer day! I’ve heard that adding oats makes them extra thick and delicious, but haven’t tried it yet. I almost always have eggs in some form for breakfast. I’m still loving egg white puffs, but I often make coconut flour crepes/pancakes or pumpkin protein cakes (all egg based!). And I always have a side of sauteed spinach with garlic.
My meal isn’t complete if I don’t have both savory and sweet!
I see smoothies all over blogs and they always look so good and seem to be such a healthy choice! I have a hard time with them though because I never feel satisfied after drinking one, I think mainly because I feel like I am drinking not eating? Maybe I need to try making one and having it in a bowel with a spoon!
i think that’s a great idea! make it extra thick, add some cereal and/or granola as toppings, and dig in with a spoon.
This is almost exactly how I make my smoothies too and I love it! Great recipe — thanks for sharing Ashley.
Not a breakfast fan… shame on me! I did have some cucumbers with sea salt this morning.
JP got me a nice blender for my birthday, thinking I might use it for smoothies so I would eat SOMETHING for breakfast. I may have to bust it out soon, because this smoothie looks so refreshing!
I used to make breakfast smoothies EVERY morning, last summer and through the fall. But I haven’t made one since! I should try one again!
Love this recipe! I love all of the ingredients you pack in there! I have been going crazy for smoothies this summer! Something about the heat just makes me not want anything else!
you and me both! ice cream and smoothies almost always sound good to me during the summer months.
Haha! I like how the smoothie is basically overflowing. I always do that too. Must get everything in the glass!
you bet.
there was enough to fill up this glass again too! it was super filling!
I love this recipe! And, I love smoothies for breakfast.
I love that you can put so much into them without really changing the taste.
Well yum. I havne’t done smoothies for a long time over here. I’m too busy making dough. Ha ha.
I always love your pics outside like that.
thank you! i usually do them outside in the early mornings when there isn’t much natural light inside yet.
I agree–breakfast is essential for me! My husband rarely eats breakfast and usually doesn’t eat lunch until 2pm…I don’t know how he does it!
my husband can do the same thing. boys…
I love how many colors you fit into that smoothie! Looks delicious! I haven’t been making spinach smoothies nearly enough this summer.
I have one every day, it’s usually peanut butter banana with protein and oats! So good!
peanut butter banana smoothies are the best!
mmmm sounds so summery babe! I need breakfast too! I couldn’t imagine going without!
YUM! I make TONS of smoothies in the summer! I’ve been on a cacao cherry kick lately!!
I don’t make nearly as many smoothies as I should & would like to, but they’re just never what I’m in the mood for on the weekends. (can’t easily make one post-workout at the gym before work M-F)
I’ve never had oats or pb in a smoothie before, but it sounds good!
I have a smoothie pretty much EVERY day! LOVE ‘em.
I do spinach, choc protein powder, almond milk, berries, greek yog, ice, and stevia. SO good.
Lately I have been eating eggs for breakfast. During the school year, I workout most mornings and don’t have time to make them. This morning I had an omelet with two eggs, spinach, mushroom, and a little morel and leek brick cheese. On the side I had strawberries. It has kept me going for five hours now!
sounds delicious!
I love smoothies! I usually eat them for an afternoon snack. I don’t know why I don’t do them for breakfast! I need to! Mine always end up being green though from my spinach!
that looks great! so refreshing for the morning.
Breakfast is by far my favorite meal of the day, and it’s so important! I’ve never tried oats in a smoothie before, do you grind them in a food processor first or just throw them right in?
i just throw them right in! they grind up in the blender!
My favourite breakfast is probably protein pancakes. I love pancakes, so having a healthified version is awesome – they tend to come out at least 3-4 days a week.
I love smoothies in the summer! I like to make a green smoothie with almond milk, spinach, protein powder and a frozen banana with cereal and fruit toppings. I work out in the mornings, so I tend to be overheated from the weather and from exercising, so a smoothie is a perfect solution.
i’ve been eating a lot of protein pancakes myself lately.
I’ve never really had a smoothie for breakfast before because whenever I have smoothies for snacks, they only keep me full for like 1.5 hours max!
Love your idea to add oats to it though – that would definitely give it some staying power!
i notice that the oats + nut butter helps give it some major staying power!
Breakfast is my faaaaaavorite meal of the day! I have no idea how some people skip it. I would die. I’ve only put oats in my smoothie one time and it was so good, I completely forgot about it! Thanks for the reminder ;D
breakfast is my all time favorite meal of the day too!
Ohhhh that looks so tasty
. I need to make a smoothie asap. I haven’t made one since I moved home. Must bust out that blender!!
I make a TON of smoothies in the summer! For breakfast and for post-workout eats. I love to add cottage cheese and protein powder for my protein (and to make it creamy). This one looks delicious!
i need to try adding cottage cheese! i’m sure that’d be tasty!
hey! what type of protein powder do you use?? Im looking into added some more protein to my diet and would love to know your intake! thanks
hi caitlyn! i’m not partial to a specific brand, but currently i’m using 1st step pro wellness whey protein powder. i like to switch it up depending on what i’ve heard and what’s on sale. i try to find ones that are low in sugar and carbs, and high in protein. i don’t track my protein intake but i’m guessing i get around 70-80 grams per day, maybe sometimes more.
Yum, I love how the smoothie is overflowing. Mine always make huge amounts.
For some reason, smoothies never ever fill me up, no matter what I add in them. I guess its just because its liquid.
I still make them though, especially throughout the summer.
I love them with oats for the texture. Avocado is super good too, gets so creamy! And of course an insane amount of fruits.
i would suggest making your smoothies extra thick, adding some toppings, and eating it with a spoon out of a bowl! it might seem more satisfying to you that way.
Looks delicious. One of my favorite smoothies
Love me some smoothies
Your photos have been so amazing lately! Absolutely gorgeous
I completely agree – I do not understand how anyone can miss breakfast it is so important and I feel completely out of touch if I don’t get me some breakfast!
xo Emilie @ Hungry Delights
mmm made this with blueberries this morning – so good!!!
this sounds great! I’ve never tried oats in my smoothies– I’m with you there though, they’re my favorite breakfast for the summer
YUM! that smoothie sounds awesome. I don’t have any protein powder on hand though. Would it be possible to leave it out?
i’m OBSESSED
i’m OBSESSED with oatmeal in my smoothies! even better is already cooked oatmeal! don’t hack it till you try it! it’s amazing!
