I hope your Wednesday is going great so far! Today I wanted to do a “Q & A” post that includes various questions I get from readers on a regular basis. This one mostly focuses on personal questions I’ve received. Enjoy!
How long have you lived in Utah? What brought you out there?
I’ve lived out in Utah for about three years now. My husband moved out here several months before we got married for a job opportunity, and I followed. Never in a million years did I think I would live in Utah of all places!
Do you like living in Utah?
Yes and no. It is absolutely beautiful, and there’s a ton of outdoor activities to do. I also appreciate experiencing all four seasons since Arizona and Southern California don’t get that. However, I do miss my family (they’re back in Arizona) so much, and I’m not a fan of the long winters here.
How do you and Cody deal with living away from family? Is it difficult?
I would be lying if I said it were easy. We miss them very much! Cody and I are both very big family people and close to our families. We make sure we see them every several months, but it’s still not the same as living nearby. Of course there’s been several great things that have resulted in us living in another state as well. We both feel we’ve grown closer in our marriage and have been able to make our own lives out here. I wouldn’t trade our time out here in Utah for anything, but we’re hoping to be near family again someday in the future.
Where do you work and what do you do?
I actually have a few part time jobs, and I love them all. I work part time as the Children’s Director at our church, which at times feels like a full time job, but it depends on the week and what’s going on. My position is responsible for all of the children’s programs (nursery through 6th grade) and activities that go on at our church. For example, I ensure we have volunteers to teach Sunday School classes, I choose the curriculum the teachers use, I plan and organize Vacation Bible School and kids’ camps, etc. I also substitute for the school district we live in on some Tuesdays and most Fridays. I just started doing this in September (of 2012) and have really enjoyed it. I initially decided to give substituting a go because the thought of being a teacher has always intrigued me, and I wanted to see if I really would enjoy being in the classroom. Shortly after I started substituting we got pregnant, so I’m not sure if/when the full time teaching thing will ever happen, but possibly down the road. Of course I also blog here at My Food ‘N’ Fitness Diaries which doesn’t provide me with a ton of income by any means, but it does help and I absolutely love doing it. My jobs will change after baby Hunter gets here, and I plan to go into detail about that all when the time is right.
Where did you go to college?
I went to a Christian university right outside of Los Angeles called Azusa Pacific University.
What is your degree in?
I have a B.A. in Psychology with a concentration in Health. As you can see, my jobs don’t really have much to do with my degree (other than some of my blogging). My plan was to go on to get my M.S. in Nutrition and do nutritional counseling, but obviously God had different plans for me. Cody and I got married several months after I graduated, and I was burnt out from school. I also wasn’t sure I still wanted to go into the nutrition field at that point. I still question, “What do I want to be when I grow up?”, but currently I’m just incredibly stoked to be a mom to Hunter and we’ll see what happens next.
What part of Arizona are you from?
I grew up bouncing back and forth between my mom’s house and my dad’s house. My mom lived in Peoria, and my dad lived in Scottsdale. They both still live in the Phoenix area, so we go back to visit pretty regularly.
What are your hobbies? What do you like to do for fun?
I love food and all of the cooking, baking, and eating that goes along with it. Nutrition has always been an interesting topic to me as well, and I find myself researching it on a regular basis. I also love fitness – running, group exercise classes, strength training, yoga – you name it. Cody and I also like to camp and hike during the summer months. Even though I do get a little income from blogging, I mostly consider it a hobby. I absolutely love writing, connecting with other like-minded people, and sharing my passion for healthy living. Reading is another hobby I’ve developed just within the past year or so that I continue to enjoy more and more.
How would you describe your personality?
Hmm, this is a pretty loaded question, but I’ll try my best. I’ll start by saying that I’m definitely a Type A personality aka I am go-go-go (I’ve gotten better at this though), I’m determined, I worry more than I care to admit, and I can be a perfectionist at times. I would say I’m a good mix of extroverted and introverted. Any personality test I’ve ever taken rates me at about 55% extroverted and 45% introverted, and I would say that’s pretty spot on. Being around people gives me energy, but only for so long, and then I need my alone time. That’s pretty much the same with my alone time – I need it, but only for so long and then I go crazy without people around. What can I say, I’m kind of complicated.
I have a good sense of humor and love to laugh, but I’m not particularly witty…more just goofy. I also love to talk – yes, I can definitely be a chatter box.
Do you have any siblings? What is your family like?
My parents got divorced when I was just a baby, and they each got remarried when I was right around two years old. I feel very blessed with my situation of having divorced parents compared to some of the other stories I’ve heard. Both of my step parents treat me like their own child, and I was able to see both sets of parents regularly throughout my childhood. I have a brother who is 20 from my mom and stepdad, and I have a sister who is 20 and a brother who is 17 from my dad and stepmom. We’re all very close, and I’m so thankful for such wonderful families.

Question:
- I plan to do more FAQ posts in the coming weeks revolving around the topics of food, fitness, Cody/marriage/relationship, pregnancy, and miscellaneous. Leave any of your questions in the comment section below or email them to me HERE.

I absolutely loved reading these and learning a little more about your life. Thanks for sharing!
What a cute family you have!!! I am from Utah although I live down south were it never really snows too much, it’s lovely! But my family all live up north and as much as I hate the winter up there and love the warm weather down here, I completely understand what you mean about living away from your family! I mean I’m only 4 hours from them, but it’s just not the same as being able to drive over for a Sunday dinner! We definitely have plans of moving by my family one day in the future as well!
What’s your all time favourite nut butter?
Trust me huh! Do you have any weird phobias?
I didn’t know these things about you. I loved reading them and look forward to reading more!
I commented this before, but I think it might’ve went to spam — how did you know when you were ready to start a family?
I can totally relate to not knowing what I want to do “when I grow up.” I substituted for months, as well, and then I accepted a permanent position working with first graders. Now that I’m in the position, I’ve realized that I don’t want to go back to school for teaching. On the plus side, I’m glad I figured it out before spending money another degree!
What is your current permanent position if you don’t mind me asking? What made you realize you don’t want to go into teaching?
Is it okay if I email you? I don’t want to explain everything in a blog comment for work/privacy reasons
.
Of course!
Okay, I couldn’t find your email address, so I used your Contact Me page. Hopefully it sent
.
Hmm for some reason I never got your email. If you filled out the Contact Me page, it should’ve gone straight to my email. Otherwise my email address is ashlw0304@yahoo.com
Hmm, okay. I emailed straight to your email address this time, so you should get it now!
I love these kinds of posts
I can really relate to the idea of not knowing what you want to be when you grow up. I’ve always felt that way, and still do even though I’m close to 30. There’s so many different areas I’d like to try and I don’t think I’m done yet!
Love this! That’s cool that you’re in Utah. I didn’t realize that. I’m from Colorado, right next door! I agree about the long winters, but the weather there is pretty decent.
Your wedding pics are so beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
Yeah the weather isn’t too bad…. It depends on the year though.
I didn’t know that you went to college outside of LA! You learn something new every day!
Oh, and I swear we are exactly alike in our personalities. But that doesn’t surprise me!
Hehe doesn’t surprise me either!
I feel like I know you so much better now! I bet it’s hard being away from family! Hopefully your family will get to see baby Hunter as often as possible!
I loved reading this post and learning more about you! My hubby and I moved to LA about a year ago for his job, and like you, are away from our families…which is a new experience – so I can definitely relate!
Love these kinds of posts! Haha although I don’t get many questions from readers like this to respond to so I don’t see any in my future… I have a blogging question: how do you earn money from your blog? Or personal training? Other questions… hmmm… how can I meet a great guy like Cody? Hahahaha
Haha you’re too funny about the Cody question. I swear I just got super lucky. I met him at our church back in AZ, so I definitely think joining a church could help.
loved this! i think we’d be friends IRL
do you have any favorite books?
A.) I feel ya on living far away from the family! my husband and I just got to move closer which is awesome (especially with Baby on the way) but of course adds new challenges (where/when to spend holidays, how often too visit, and making sure we are in control of “our” family) but its a problem I don’t mind having. I’ll be praying that moving to Arizona is what God has planned for you!
B.) I think 80% don’t work in our degree field, lol. at least I know I’m not. Also if full time teaching is something you are really considering, I would look into what it takes to get certified now (for me I’m having to get my masters which will take 2-3 years with a young one) because thats something you could do while staying at home with Hunter and then be ready to go whenever you decide you want to start working again. Just a thought from an old friend
Very true! Thanks for the advice girl! Hope you and baby are doing well!
I love these posts! I have a few personal questions (i feel weird asking u personal questions!! haha)-
-What were you doing to prepare your body for pregnancy nutritionally, supplements..etc?
-Do you take any pre natal supplements and what brand?
-Do you plan to use cloth diapers?
- What exactly is a “wake up call” from Hunter? I have never been preg. obviously!
- What does it feel like when Hunter moves and kicks inside of you? Can you feel your organs moving around??? Eekkk! It seems so weird to me!
Thanks !!
Love ur blog!
Don’t feel weird at all! I will plan on answering your questions in a future pregnancy FAQ post!
okay yay!
I can’t wait to, God willing, get to feel what it is like to be pregnant someday
it’s always fun getting to KNOW you. And i love your part time jobs.
This was a fun post to read!
I guess I would ask, if it’s not too personal…
1. How did you make friends/develop a support network in a new city, when not in school? My fiancee and I are considering moving/looking into jobs in a town about 4 hrs from both our families, and it sounds maybe lonely? But I totally see and would look forward to being able to ‘build our own life together’ as you said!
2. When you talk about getting your pre-baby body back, are you referring to the size you were at when you recovered from HA and got pregnant? Or the size before you gained weight in order to become pregnant? So sorry if this is too personal, I feel like it is, but having dealt with similar issues, I am just wondering how you see this.
Great questions Rose! I will plan on answering them both in future FAQ posts!
I still don’t know what I want to do when I “grow up” either…I’m in my first full-time year of teaching and just don’t love it sadly…At times I feel extremely embarrassed that I don’t want to do exactly what my college degree is for, but it helps to know that others don’t work in their exact field either necessarily. It’s hard for me to not know where I want to be or what I should be doing!
Did/do you ever have a hard time not know what is to come? I’m a major type-A person too and love to have things planned out. It’s a huge challenge for me to completely trust that God will lead me in the right direction, even though I know that’s what I have to do!
I feel ya girl. The one thing I have learned about my schooling and finding a job is that it all works out, and I can’t stress about it. I wish I could give you answers, but don’t ever feel embarrassed! I think it’s totally normal to be honest.
As for having a hard time not knowing what to come…YES! I’ve definitely struggled with that. I feel like I could write a full post about this, so look for it in the near future.
Thanks, Ashley : )
I’m looking forward to that post!
Are we the same person?! YES!
Hahaha I think we already knew that.
Type A all the way, haha. I get from my Dad. It drives people up a wall sometimes (and even myself) but I do like that it’s shaped me into a very determined person!
Haha I get it from my dad too… And yes, it drives me up the wall sometimes too!
I loved getting to know more about you! I feel like our personalities are spot on. It’s funny because I usually notice the several blog friends I connect with on a regular basis have such similar personalities. I guess that is why it is SO EASY to become fast friends.
I totally agree! I can’t wait to meet you someday!
I loved getting to know more about you!
Nice to know that I’m not the only one stuck in the what-do-I-want-to-be-when-I-grow-up syndrome.
What’s your favourite movie?
Haha I think alot of us bloggers are the same personality. Literally everything you said was just about the same. I LOVE being around people and teaching and training but I also LOVE my me time and down time at home…Love this Q and A!
What do you use for income blogging??
I loved this!! I would say your personality is – you are amazingly sweet, gracious, and a wonderful friend and encourager.
Aww you’re the sweetest! Thanks love!
I love reading Q&A’s about people! I just want to say you are absolutely beautiful, and I know God has amazing things in store for your growing family
How long did you and Cody date before getting married? How did you know he was ‘the one’?
You’re so sweet Dolce! Thank you! I will plan on answering your questions in a FAQ post in the coming weeks!
Great post! My parents divorced when I was a baby too. I’m somewhat happy it happened like that because I couldn’t imagine the heartbreak if it had happened when I was older!
I would love to know more about how you came into blogging, how you increased your readership and some of your favorite blogs to read!
I’m SOOO GLAD you 1.) Are posting TWICE a day!!! And 2.) Are sharing parts of your life with us that we had no clue about!!! I eagerly look forward to your posts every day and just so AdMiRe your continued willingness to be so real, honest, genuine, and relatable
I’ve got 2 questions:
- Did you use an ovulation kit while trying to get pregnant? My husband and I are now trying and I’m using one for the 1st time and I’m just frustrated b/c it still hasn’t shown “Yes” yet…and I figured up based on my typical cycle it would have already happened :/ I’m honestly semi-worried that I did alot of damage to my body during the time before and right after we got married. I cut my calories and weight pretty drastically for my small 5’2″ frame too quickly.
- Besides prayer and trusting in our Heavenly Father Above (which I DEF do!!!), what would you say is the biggest contributing factor in helping you get pregnant???
nice to know more about you! You look stunning in that wedding photo!
I love these FAQ’s because I love getting to know more about the blogger. I think our personalities match up a lot!:) Um, yep I definitely don’t know what I want to be when I grow up, it’s slightly frustrating but I know I’ll figure it out eventually!
I love this question/answer post! I’m relatively new to your blog, but have enjoyed reading past posts in my downtime. It’s odd how people feel as though they can relate to complete strangers so much via blogs! My questions are:
- How/why did you & your husband pick the name Hunter? I may have missed the post if you explained it in he past. For some reason I find it interesting knowing the story behind people’s names!
- How did you get introduced to the blogging world? What are your favorite blogs or who/what inspired you to create your own? Is it really time consuming?
- Do any of your non-blogging friends share your enthusiasm for fitness and nutrition? As much as I love and miss my friends (my husband and I had to move to El Paso, TX last summer for his job- luckily we’re only here a few years! We’re originally from Northwest Indiana, about 40 minutes outside of Chicago), I sometimes feel as though I can relate to bloggers more regarding a healthy lifestyle.
I love these kinds of posts.
God’s plans for you are pretty darn amazing right now and they never seem to be what we start out thinking they are. Funny how He works likes that.
Beautiful wedding pictures friend!
Thank you!
You’re so sweet! God is pretty darn awesome!
I think the winters of Utah are what would get me. I always say that if I move somewhere, it will be North Carolina.
I’m currently in New England and we’ve been having sharp winter temperatures as well (…well…today it’s 50 and rainy but a few days ago it was -8…that’s New England for ya!)
Loved reading this post!
Loved reading this! It’s always fun to get to know people more!
Fun post!! I don’t have any questions for you now…but I am going to be texting you later when I know you’re awake. Actually, you’re probably awake now anyways…time to text!
Thanks for writing this post! I am a fairly new reader so it was fun to learn more about you!
Baby Hunter will be the BEST job!! I love it, and I would be lying if I didn’t think that just being a mom (and not also a student) would be easier. I’m just looking forward to the end of April when I’ll have 4 months off to just spend and enjoy with Nia!! I would also like to learn how I could make a little money from blogging, not that that’s why I blog, but because I do enjoy doing it, and one of my goals is to get better at doing it!!
