Let’s Chat About Christmas

Woohoo for Friday!

This is also the last weekend before Christmas… Sad, exciting, crazy all in one! I thought it’d be kinda fun to do a little Christmas survey (thanks Amanda!) to fill you in on how we celebrate Christmas and what our traditions are like over here. Of course some of this may change as Hunter gets older, but this is how it all goes down for now. Smile

Before Christmas…

How soon do you start shopping?
I typically wait to start shopping until after Thanksgiving, which is when I really start to feel more in the Christmas spirit.

Do you have a lot of gifts to buy?
Not too many. We did handmade gifts for our parents, gifts for my siblings, and then we participate in a few gift exchanges. I hardly bought anything for Hunter this year because he already has so much, and there’s just more coming from grandparents. I don’t think he’ll know the difference this year anyways!

Do you bake cookies?
Yes! I typically like to make a TON and distribute them to friends and neighbors, but that didn’t happen this year. A little boy named Hunter has taken up quite a bit of my time and energy. Winking smile I did the Christmas cookie decorating party, and that was the extent of my cookie baking this year. I was going to try to do more, but I didn’t want to feel stressed about it all. This is something I’d like to do more of with our kid(s) when they get older though.

Decorations…

Do you put up a Christmas tree?
Absolutely! I LOVE when it’s all lit up!

If so, is it fake or real?
Fake. A real tree would be nice for the smell and all, but the practical side of me likes fake. They’re more affordable in the long run, ours is pre-lit, and it’s less mess to clean up!

Do you like tinsel?
No! It’s a pain in the butt to clean up! Once again, I like clean and easy clean up. Smile

Do you use handmade or store bought ornaments?
Store bought for the most part. We have a few handmade ornaments from others, but not many.

Do you put Christmas lights outside your house?
Yes! Cody does a wonderful job.

Do you put lights on the tree?
We have a pre-lit tree, but yes, I’m all about lights! I prefer white lights on the tree.

How about popcorn and cranberries?
Hmm, not sure I understand this question, but yes, I do like both!

Is there a wreath hanging on your door?
Yep – love beautiful wreaths!

Christmas Eve…

Do you celebrate it?
Yes! Growing up, I always celebrated with my mom and stepdad on Christmas Eve, and my dad and stepmom on Christmas Day. Now that I’m married and have a family of my own, our tradition is to go to a nice dinner and then a Christmas Eve church service. We’ve talked about how we want to do Christmas Eve as Hunter gets older, but we’re not exactly sure yet. Church will always be included though!

Do you hang up your stocking?
Well, of course! Stocking stuffers are some of my favorite gifts!

Have you ever left cookies out for Santa?
When we were kids, we did! And carrots for the reindeer of course!

Christmas Eve dinner last year…

Favorite…

Christmas Movie?
Miracle on 34th Street

Character from any Christmas Movie?
No idea on this one.

Christmas Song?
Pretty much any Trans-Siberian Orchestra Christmas song.

Christmas Memory?
I have fun memories of my stepdad being super sneaky about Santa. One year he went on our roof to make it sound like Santa was up there, jingled some bells, and left with a “Ho! Ho! Ho!”. I remember being SO convinced that it was really Santa!

Christmas Cookie?
ALL the Christmas cookies!

This or That…

Give or Receive?
Can I choose both? I absolutely love giving gifts, but who doesn’t love receiving some gifts too?

Ham or Turkey?
Honey baked ham for Christmas!

Star or Angel?
Star.

White Lights or Colored Lights?
White!

Blinking Lights or Still Lights?
Still.

Were you Naughty or Nice this year?
I’d like to think mostly nice!

Presents…

What do you want for Christmas this year?
Here ya go.

When do you open your gifts?
Christmas Day morning!

What’s the best gift you’ve ever gotten?
Going to get totally cheesy here, but I don’t even care. Best gift = a lifetime with my husband. He proposed to me the week before Christmas a few years ago, and it was the best gift I could’ve ever received.

What’s the worst gift you’ve ever gotten?
I couldn’t even tell ya!

Do you like wrapping gifts?
I wouldn’t say I love it, but I don’t dread it either.

Christmas ‘12 – preggo with little Hunter Smile

Random…

Can you name all the reindeer?
Yikes – not sure I could!

Have you ever gotten a kiss under the mistletoe?
I don’t think I have… That needs to change!

Do you go caroling?
I have before – it was so fun!

Do you drive around and look at the Christmas lights?
Yes! This is one of my favorite things to do. We just did it last weekend!

Have you ever had a white Christmas?
Yes, and I love it. Although sadly, we’ve never actually had a white Christmas in Utah while we’ve been here. Last year it was all snowy on Christmas Day, but we were in Arizona. I’m really hoping we’ll get some good snow this year for Christmas Day since we’ll be here to enjoy it!

Who do you celebrate Christmas with?
Well, it depends on the year. If we were closer to family, it’d definitely be with them, but this year it’s just Cody, Hunter, and me since we’re staying in Utah. We’ll also go over to our friends’ house Christmas Day evening for a dinner.

Have you ever had your picture taken with Santa?
Yes – several times growing up!

What part of Christmas do you look most forward to?
Christmas Eve service and spending quality time with my family on Christmas Day. And this year, I especially can’t wait to celebrate Hunter’s very first Christmas!

Hi Ashley! So I had to laugh about the cranberries and popcorn because I always thought this was kind of a weird tradition my parents had. People string (uncooked) cranberries and popcorn alternating to make a long decoration to string around the Christmas tree. Maybe that is what the question was referring to. I don’t really get it either–maybe because it’s white and red?? Just thought I’d share in case you were interested. Have a Merry Christmas with your beautiful family!

Ok, you are from a different generation! They did this before people had money to buy decorations so they just used what they had. Dried cranberries and popcorn were cheap and available!

I was gonna do a survey like this today but then decided I’ll save it until later :) I will always have a fake tree! My birthday is 10 days before Christmas so my parents bought a fake tree the same year I was born (no real trees because of a newborn!) and we’re still using the same fake tree. I’ve never done a real tree and I reeeeeeeeally like just being able to go out to the garage and bring it in the house when we’re ready to set it up! :)

My favourite movie if Elf for sure, too funny.
Christmas Eve my family comes to our house, we have appys, watch a movie and have a sleepover – it is my favourite part of Christmas since all my family is here :)

What’s your favorite Christmas movie? A Christmas Story

White or colored lights? Colored LED lights (the larger bulbs)

Do you do anything special on Christmas Eve? Last year hubby and I watched Rudolph and Frosty in bed (I was preggo). This year will probably be similar, but with our baby sleeping in his pack n play nearby :)

What’s your favorite part of the Christmas season? Spending quality time with family

I am a white lights girl too. We strung popcorn when I was little and decorated our tree with it. You just need a needle and thread and a WHOLE TON OF POPCORN! I remember eating more than I strung and my sister always being mad because she had to pop more. Ha!
Our Christmas Eve tradition (growing up & til last year) was the children’s mass with choir followed by heavy appetizers/ cookies at my parents house after while watching The Night They Saved Christmas and hanging our tacky homemade ornaments from childhood. This year my husband & I are breaking the tradition (oye!) and instead of cooking, we are taking my parents & sister out to a nice meal then home for a movie / cookies. :) (My parents are visiting from out of town).
Enjoy Christmas with your family & Hunter! A baby is the only thing on my Christmas list this year. :)

    • Ashley says

Ahhh THAT is what they are talking about when they ask about the popcorn. ;) Sounds like you have a great Christmas Eve planned!

We always put up a Christmas tree with lights and lots of ornaments. We were a little late this year only putting everything up last weekend but oh well! We always have a big dinner on Xmas eve! Can’t wait. We are having another party on Monday since my mans is coming into town. She hasn’t been to WA in 8 years. Time flies! Happy holidays to you and your family!

I love baking this time of year and usually end up making a batch or two of cookies from scratch for friends! There are always so many good Christmas cookie recipes out there!

And YES, tinsel is the worst!!! Growing up we used to always have tinsel and would end up still finding random strands around the house months later haha. My mom finally gave up on it about the time I was in middle school ;)

  8. says

The highlights of my Christmas growing up was always the Christmas Eve service, and then my brother and I would always exchange our gifts to each other on Christmas Eve. I hope you, Cody, and Hunter have a wonderful first Christmas as a family of three :)

Also – I’ve been meaning to ask you – you mentioned a while back that you were thinking about trying out essential oils. Did you ever look into it any further? I’ve been considering it as well and figured I’d ask – I have no idea where to start!

    • Ashley says

Yes, I have tried a few of Doterra oils! I have a couple friends that have let me borrow samples. I’ve mostly used them for colds so far. I use lemon on Hunter’s hands after he’s at the gym in place of a hand sanitizer, and I use “On Guard” and “Breathe” on the bottom of his feet and chest when he starts to get a little cold. I won’t be using them for EVERYTHING like some people do, but I do like the idea of using them for sickness for Hunter since they’re all natural. I’ll probably buy more when I run out of the samples. I’m no expert, but let me know if you have more questions. :)

Merry Christmas, Ashley! We are driving home from visiting my mom and I just passed my laptop around the car to show everyone Hunter’s picture under the tree. He is so cute and we all agree that he has awesome hair! :-)

We go to Christmas Eve mass at 8 PM and then come home and have our favorite snacky kinds of food and Christmasy cocktails. We stay up until about midnight and then I almost always get up early for a super-peaceful Christmas morning run. I throw my pre-made blueberry French toast casserole in the oven to bake while I shower, and then we all eat breakfast and open presents. We usually stop by a few friends’ houses on Christmas afternoon.

    • Ashley says

Aw, thank you Debbie! So sweet of you and your family. :) That sounds like the perfect Christmas – enjoy! Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Love this survey! As always, Hunter’s hair just makes me smile. He’s such a cutie. I’m not sure I could choose a favorite Christmas movie, but I love The Grinch, Olive the Other Reindeer, and Elf. And my fave Christmas lights are the colorful bulbs. So cute!!
